Subject: Octet
in 'C' Op.176
Message:
Does anyone have any information on whether the Raff "Octet
for Strings in C-major, Op.176" is in print and what
the publisher source is if it is available? Any information
would be most appreciated. |

I understand - but don't know from first hand knowledge -
that the original publisher Ries & Erler are able to supply
Xeroxed copies. Their website is at www.rieserler.de.
Best of luck! |

I received the following reply to my enquiry to the University
Library in
Berlin, with an attachment order form. I am planning
to order the
microfilm copy of the score when I can find
somebody able to
print out from it! Others may like to
do likewise.
Dear Mr. Carter,
thank You for Your request from 15 December 2003.
We do possess only the score. From the old rare books we
do not make
normal papercopies. We will make a microfilm, from which
you can get a
duplicate or papercopies. I will send you an attachment,
what You can
fill out and send back to me per mail or per fax. It's
written in
german, but I believe, you can understand it. Please mark,
what kind of
duplicate You like to have.
When you send us the order, we will give our score to the "MIK-Center"
in Berlin, from where you will get the invoice and the
copies.
Yours sincerely
Karin Sidow

I have photocopies of both the Octet in C and the Sextet
in G minor. Although there is a good recording of the Octet,
which I find a very fine work, I have never heard the Sextet
performed - something I very much look forward to. |

MDG recorded the Sextet several years ago using, I think,
the Ensemble Villa Musica. For some reason it hasn't been
released yet.
I heard the work in a concert in Stuttgart last year and
it quite bowled me over - a marvelous piece of vintage Raff.
I particularly treasure the memory of the slow movement variations.
There's a full review of the concert at www.raff.org/stuttgart.htm.
