Subject: SCHNEIDER´S
VERSIONS IN NAXOS
Message:
Dears Friends:
Halleluja! We can buy in a Budget label price Naxos two Raff´s
Symphonies (#3 "In Walde" & #10 "In Autumn"),
conducted by Urs Schneider and played by Slovak State Phil.
(Kosi^ce). This recording was first released in Marco Polo
in 1991.
Yesterday I bought this CD in a Great Stores (only by € 6,95),
but I arrived at home very later and I can heard it.
I was surprised when read the 3rd. Symphony during time in
Schneider´s version: 38,22 min. My other version (Davan-Wetton)
is more extended: 45,00 min. Today, I´ll compare both.
Somebody wants to give me an opinion about this two symphonies
and about this recording?
Thanks for anticipate, and excuse me for my bad english,
Cheers,
Fernando. |

Hi Fernando,
I revewed this CD last month at www.raff.org/review20.htm.
The 10th. Symphony is an adequate if rather lacklustre preformance.
The same is true of the 3rd. except for the finale where
7 or 8 minutes are cut from the finale, removing the development
section completely. This will be obvious straight away from
comparison with the much better Hyperion issue. Also the
3rd and 4th. movements are run into one track! All in all
a pretty disastrous version of one of Raff's great works.
Having said that, I'm almost inclined to think that any Raff
release on such a widely available and cheap label as Naxos
is a good thing, irrespective of its quality.
Cheers. |

Hello Mark,
As soon as possible, I´ll read with special attention www.raff.org/review20.htm.
Do yo know if this cut in the #3 finale was made by Mr. Schneider´s
decission or by comercial imperative of HNH?
I agree with you that is good thing We can buy Classical
Music by cheap prices. In special attention to young afficionates
(18 - 25 years old) with modest economys because his precarious
jobs. For this kind of people, isn´t the same to pay € 6,00
and discover the classics that pay about € 18,00 to get "de
luxe" issue.
Thanks for anticipate, and best regards from RAFFCELONA (Spain).

I don't know the answer to that one but as there is no artistic
justification whatsoever for the cut I think that we have
to give maestro Schneider the benfit of the doubt and blame
HNH.
Interestingly, conductor Richard Kapp made an identical cut
on Vox's pioneering LP of the Symphony in the 1970s - presumably
to enable them to fit on "Ode au Printemps". |
