Subject: A Spanish flavour to "Dame Kobold"?

Message:

Fernanado recently wondered whether he detected that the overture to "Dame Kobold" had a Spanish flavour.

It had eluded me I must say but Fernanado is correct! Doing a little internet detective work reveals that Raff's opera is based upon the play "La Dama Duende" by the famous Spanish playwright of the 17th. century Pedro Calderon de la barca.

Well spotted...

True, the main allegro theme of the "Dame Kobold" has a Spanish flavour to it. I would doubt that there are many references to Spain in the opera to follow but I would have to play through the piano score to verify this. However, there is a ballet scene in the opera which has a definitve Hungarian character. One may wonder how a touch of Hungarian comes into an opera located in Spain. The answer is simple: it's a gypsie dance, and Raff associated the gypsies clearly with an Hungarian idiom.

Volker

Dear Friends,

If you like spanish flavor in classical works, try to listen the "Intermezzo Scharzando" of César Cui´s Suite Concertante for Violin and Orchestra.
You, surely will be surprised.

Cheers,

Fernando.
