Subject: Raff's Piano Concerto

Message:

Hello,

Last month I bought a CD including Raff's Piano Concerto. I'd listened to his symphonies and overtures before, and liked them, although i was not affected profoundly. But this concerto struck me hard. Both the 2nd and 3rd movements were very good, but the first movement was a real gem. The blending of stating of ideas, counterpoint and tread was masterly, and the coda was unbelievable. While listening the last couple minutes of this movement, especially, i felt that something probed deep in my soul. It was an uncanny feeling. Is there anybody else who got that feeling also? Regards...

Dear Kemal:

I agree with you, but for me, the best movement of this great and wonderful piano concerto is the 2nd. For me, this movement talk about feelings and impressions of the nature, ancient woods and creeks with clean ans fresh waters ... that´s is the power of the great music!. Other similar feelings I have when listen the third movement of Raff Piano Trio nº 4. Also Similar impression I had when listen for first time Nielsen´s "Andante Pastorale" from his 3rd. Symphony "Espasiva". Do you know? Try to listen, surely not deceive. Only great composers can depicts landscapes that lives in our imagination.
Raff´s Piano concerto is -for me- superb, and have a great balance between piano virtuosity and very good orchestration. Other famous piano concertos are very well craftred in piano parts, but very poor orchestrated (for example, Chopin Piano Concertos).
Excuse me for my bad english.
Best wishes from Barcelona,

Fernando Oliva.

It would appear that not many of us were as slain in the spirit as you were, but you will find some previous discussions of this fine work in the forum archives under the same subject.

I am curious: which recording did you hear?

I think this is a great piece, the imagination and somehow it stays constantly "fresh", especially the first movement. The only other piano concerto I can think of right offhand that is in the same "vein" of unflagging perpetual novelty is Moscheles` 6th.
