Subject: Raff's music touched many

Message:

Recently, listening to Dvorak's 8th Symphony (3rd movement), I was struck with a Raffian sound. It then occurred to me, how underrated Raff's influence on other, younger composers was. Richard Strauss, as well as Tschaikowsky, admitted this influence. A few days ago I heard my new recording of Hermann Goetz's F Major Symphony, op. 9. Once again, as original as this beautiful work is, Raff's voice is clearly in the harmonies (1st movement, opening).

Have I left anyone out...other composers who admired or were influenced by Raff?

Jack

Hermann Goetz (1840-76) was a German composer of much promiss who died prematurely at the age of 36. George Bernard Shaw believed his Symphony in F to be superior to any symphony by Mendelssohn, Schumann, or Brahms. George Bernard Shaw also believed Josef Stalin to be a great and kind leader, so this outrageous statement is more a comment on GBS than on Goetz.

But Goetz is a really fine composer. His work has been issued on a number of labels. Particularly worth investigating is the CPO series:

Chamber Music (CPO 999086)
Symphony + Violin Concerto (CPO 999076)
Nanie and other choral music (CPO 999316)
Piano Concertos (CPO 999098)
Above three in a three disc set at a special price (CPO 999939)

My favorites: the Second Piano Concerto, Op. 18; and the Piano Trio Op. 1

His "Nanie" is set to the same text and for the same forces as Brahms's...and he did it first.

Sorry, Fernando---John answered your question before I could reply.

Yes, John's right. Goetz has several fine works. I recently purchased from jpc (a German-based internet "store" with a great selection) a 3-disc set of his complete orchestral works, performed by the Nordwestfunk Sinfonieorchester. But I'm afraid they only ship to German addresses (I live in Schwetzingen, near Heidelberg).

Keep listening--and discover!

Best, Jack

Hi Fernanado,

The good news is that jpc WILL ship anywhere. Here in the UK the CD prices are so outrageous that I get almost all my CDs from them. The recent rise in the Euro against sterling doesn't make them as cheap as they were but the saving more than covers the mailing cost - especially if you buy "in bulk" as I'm afraid I usually do.

As Jack says, the selection is great (all the Tudor Raff repertoire for instance). Their site doesn't have a Spanish translation but it is available in English - for the Classical section go to:

http://www.jpc.de/en/klassik/klassik_set.html

Best wishes,

Mark

Oops! Sorry, Fernando, I guess I underestimated jpc. Because I live in Germany I never thought of trying other (foreign) addresses. Recently, I received the beautiful "A Night in the Tropics" Symphony of Louis-Moreau Gottschalk. Also TEN Spohr overtures. What rarities these are! You can even get Raff's chamber music from jpc, which you certainly can't find on every street corner store.

Best, Jack

Dear Friends,

Talking about Raff´s influence on another composers, I found recently similarities between the ending them of Lenora´s last movement (when Wilhem and Lenora are finally reunited in death) and Mahler´s 3rd. Symphony final Adagio.
I read about this in the Bamert´s version CD educational booklet. Now I can´t remember why wrote this article.
What´s your expert opinion?
Thanks for anticipate,

Fernando.

Dear Friends,

Last Friday, I purchased a triple CD-set with Hermann Goetz works. This compilation was editated last year by the German Label CPO. It contains:
CD 1: Symphony in F major + Violin Concerto in G major + Overture "Der Widerspentigen Zähmung"
CD 2: Piano Concertos 1 & 2
CD 3: Nenie, for choir and orchestra + Psalm 137 for soprano, choir and orchestra + Overture "Francesca da Rimini" + Spring Overture.
All for € 22,83.
I only can listened the Symphony.
For me, is a good job, not inferior to Reinecke or Bruch symphonies, but inferior in comparison with Schumann, Brahms or Raff.
This work has a kindly humor sense in his two first movements, bur is less humoristic, for example, that Reinecke´s 1st. scherzo. Today, public thinks about romantics like "crying machines", and ignores the exceptional humor sense of Raff symphonies or Rubinstein piano concertos 3rd. and 4th, for example . The Adagio is effective, not much sentimental, very far, for example from real jewels of romanticism like Schumann´s 2nd. slow movement, or Mendelssohn "Scottish" and "Italian" slow movements. Fortunately is many sentimental or excessive than Tchaikovsky´s 5th. "Andante cantabile con alcuna licenza" .
The final movement is not exceptional. Very crafted: presents three themes which go on to be elaborated in the development section, and a fourth theme presented in the following coda. But is not, like all the work, the "eight wonder of the world".
Like forever, I appreciate your very expert opinion.
I´m very happy to add to my collection a new interesting and unknow romantic composer.
Thanks to Jack and John for introduce to me Hermann Goetz.
Kind regards from the hot and sunny Spain,

Fernando.
