Hi Fernando,

I understand that the original plan was to release them in numerical order - so No.2 (plus Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth) would have been the second release. For some reason Nos.3/10 came out first. I assume that No.2 wll be next but it's only an assumption.

Having said that - it is well worth the extra money to track down the Stadlmair/Bamberg Symphony recording on Tudor. A superior performance in every respect and with the added bonus of a "Türingian" Suite which is much more persuasive than the stodgy account on Marco Polo.

Thanks for your information. Best, I want for NAXOS release, because I have Thuringian Suite from Marco Polo with Italian Suite. Really, is difficult to find Tudor in Spain.
I hope to purchase this week Raff Great Violin Sonata & other violin and piano works in CPO. Is a good choice?
Sincerely yours,

Fernando.

Regarding volumes 1 & 2 of the CPO violin sonata series, if I were to purchase only one, it would be volume 2, which has the 2nd Violin Sontata and the Op. 85 pieces. The 2nd Sonata is for me a much more successful and enjoyable creation than the 1st.

Thanks for your info, John.
Surely, next week if I have free time, I will purchase Violin Sonata nº 1, and ask for the 2nd. in the same music shop.
I am goig back from holiday, so I´mvery busy, but next week I will touring a "Classical CD Safari".
I read this CD includes a Duo inspired on Wgner "Tahhnaüsser". Do you know? What´s your expert opinion?
Kind regards,

Fernando,

I listened to the Tannhauser duo twice last night. I don't have much enthusiasm for it, as it succeeds on Wagner's tunes rather than Joe's handling of them. Others, however, might like it more than I. Let me know what you think of it.

Dear John,

Well, I think Tannhausser duo was a funny kind to listen opera themes for salon. Is not original, but in Raff´s time, we like or dislike this fact, Wagner was considerate a Messiah of music, and had big influence in politic. Young comoposers like Raff in Weimar period surely having concrioption into "Wagner Army" and wrote works like this Duo.
For me this Duo is funny, but I also do not have much enthusiasm.
Kind regards,

Fernando.

Dear Friends:

I just have finished to listen Raff 2nd. Symphony coupled with two Shakespearian Overtures: Romeo and Julliet + Macbeth.
Finally. I have completed all the Raff Symphonies.
If the musical autorities would have programmed more Raff music, surely today and in the future it would be more Classical Music afecionates.
I need should have another audition of Radff 2nd. but my first impression is highly possitive. Is a very well balanced work, and struck me very hard his Andante.
About Overtures, I think Macbeth is absolutely marvelous. Romeo and Julliet is under level the same Tchaikovsky´s work, but Tchaikovsky´s Shakespearian tone poems are on the top of his production. For me, my favorite Tchaikovsky works are: 5th. Symphony, Variations on Rococó Theme and ... The Tempest.
Kind regards from Barcelona,

Fernando.

Glad to see you like the 2nd. I was wondering what you would think of it. It's one of my favorites, and Mark, our host, likes it very much too. For me, it's one of Raff's most congenial and spirited efforts. I think that with repeated listening you'll come to like it more and more.

"Romeo and Juliet" is, by general consensus, not one of Raff's best, never mind comparing it to Tchaikovsky's mega-hit, but "Macbeth", as you've noticed, is much more up to Raff's usual standards.

Raff variations on a folksong from Thuringian Suite
IP: Logged

Message:
I heard this for the first time this morning and must admit Raff is new to me.
I should like to know what the Thuringian Suite is. Is this something by Raff, or another composer? Does the folk song appear in any other piece of music?
Part of it is the basis for the music of the alma mater of the United States Military Academy at West Point. (My father and brothers went there.)
Many thanks for your help. I apologize for my ignorance.
Molly

Hi Molly,

The Thuringian Suite is an orchestral work by Raff, which lasts about 35 minutes in performance. It was written in the 1870s and has five movements, all of them associated with Thuringia - an area in north central Germany:

Salus Intrantibus
Hymn to St. Elizabeth
Dance of the Gnomes and Sylphs
Folksong Variations
Country Festival

I'm afraid that I don't know anything about the folk song used as a basis for the fourth movement.

Cheers,

It's a very fine performance by Stadlmair and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra of that much underrated work, the Symphony No.2. As their rendition of the Thuringian Suite is also much to be preferred over the Marco Polo alternative, this Tudor CD is a must buy.
