Subject: Piano Quartets op.202
Message:
Hi,
Before i begin, would like to say that i really enjoy reading all the messages on the forum, but tend to write only when i really have to...
Today is one of those rare occasions...
Would like any info regarding the 2 Piano Quartets op. 202.
Are there any recordings available and does anyone have any info regarding the music itself?
Thanks and keep up the good work!

I'm afraid that I can't add much more to what I've already put on the website - there's a RealAudio extract from the second movement of the G major quartet at www.raff.org/chamber.htm#piano_quartet.
You've probably already downloaded the Catalogue of Raff's music, but in case you haven't here's the full entry:
Op.202 Two Piano Quartets
Piano Quartet in G
1. Allegro in G
2. Allegro molto in g
3. Andante quasi Adagio in e
4. Allegro in G
Piano Quartet in c
1. Allegro in c
2. Allegro in c
3. Larghetto in A flat
4. Allegro in C
Composed in 1876. Published by Siegel (Leipzig) in 1877.
Copies of the original edition of the scores can be found in the Frankfurt University Library, the Bavarian State Library in Munich, the Basel Music Academy Library (Quartet in G only), the Royal Academy of Music Library and the Britsh Library in London, the Spaulding Library of the New England Conservatory in Boston and the New York Public Library.
I have heard the G major quuartet and it's quite reminiscent, to me at least, of the Piano Trio No.4 although with a rather dark and autumnal colouring.
I'd be delighted if anyone knows any more about these works which, incidently, MDG at one stage expressed interest in recording.
Cheers,

Dear John:
Reading new messages, I just have news about you. I hope you are fine.
I include your favorite Ferdinand Ries in my Auntumn Purchase Planning, with Xaver Scharwenka. After Holiday my wallet was very dammaged, but I could made extra effort and could buy Raff 1st. Violin Sonata (from CPO). I recommend to you.
Kind regards,
Fernando.

Again, I apologize for an off-topic post, but as Fernando mentioned Ries, I'd like put in a recommendation for his piano concerto in c# minor (my favorite key!), opus 55. I forgot to mention this one in my listing of forgotten concertos. The recording to buy (if available) is the one with Felicja Blumenthal. I have this on an ancient LP coupled with a recording of the wonderful Variations for Piano and Orchestra on a theme by Haydn ("Gott erhalte den Kaiser Franz" aka Deutschland über Alles) by Carl Czerny. |
