Subject: LISTENING RAFF 2nd.

Message:

Dear Friends,

This week-end I listened four times Raff 2nd. Sympnony. And today, I just have listened another time.
Really, it is wonderful and very balanced. I like all the movements, and the Final not decives me like in the 6th. or in the 8tn. It´s a powerful and strong final like 3rd., 4th., 5th. or 7th. (since today, my Raff final movement favorite).
I think 2nd. Symphony scherzo has another little "spanish flavour" like "Dame Kobold Overture". Do you agree with me?
Surely, when I have more money for music I would like to buy Stadlmaier version in Tudor.
Kind regards from Barcelona,

Fernando.

I am happy to hear that you liked the Raff 2nd. It's one of my favorites. In fact, when introducing a newcomer to Raff's symphonies, I use either this or the 9th. Others would probably recommend the 3rd or the 5th, but I've never warmed to the 3rd (though I acknowledge that most rate it very highly), and the 5th is a bit too programatic to work as a pure symphony: it's more like three movements of a symphony followed by a tone poem.

The 2nd is attractive in all four movements and is possessed of the good nature and high spirits more typically associated with Dvorak.

Congratulations on completing your collection of Raff symphonies!
