Subject: ESSENTIAL, VERY ESSENTIAL
Message:
Dear Friends,
Finally and fortunately, I have completed my collection of Raff Symphonies. I also have two CD´s of Raff Chamber Music, and have his Piano Concerto... but I do not have still his famous CAVATINA, well... I never have listened this piece (!)
Where I could buy it?
Thanks in advance, kind regards from Barcelona,
Fernando.

See the "Recordings" section of this web site under "Six Morceaux Op.85". The cavatina is part of that set of pieces.

Like ever, thanks John. I have other two questions:
What label is MDG? Was Sextet for Strings published on another label?.
Kind regards,
Fernando.

Hi Fernanado,
MDG is a German label which tends to specialise in "out of the way" repertoire. I have found it to be widely available throughout the world in major record stores like Tower and Virgin and through mail order. It also makes a lot of fuss about the sound quality of its recordings. It's good but I wouldn't say it was anything spectacular.
As for the Sextet - no, this is the premiere recording and it is a very fine performance indeed. There's a review at www.raff.org/review24.htm.
This CD is readily obtainable in the UK now, so I guess that you could find it in Spain without a problem.

Dear Mark,
Thanks for all!
I will try to find this CD in Barcelona however Virgin was closed his Mega-Store in our City two years ago.
Kind regards,
Fernando.

On the subject of MDG's sound, I have to say that the nicest thing about it is that it sounds very honest. As they like to boast, they don't add any of the fake reverb that most of the other labels drown their recordings in, and they always have realistic balances (no "Attack of the 10 Meter Soloist!").
By the way, Fernando, the Cavatina in its original form is on Volume 2 of the CPO series of Raff violin sonatas.
