Subject: Off Topic - "Other Composers" is too vague!
Message:
Gentlemen,
Soon we'll have a separate forum to chat about other composers who share "our guy's" obscure fate. But we must show a little discipline. Having a topic heading "Other Composers" invites that thread to become too long. Individual composers should get their own threads. Imagine if every comment we made about Raff was lumped into one giant thread called, "About Raff"... Well, that's what happens when we lump every composer from Ries to Weingartner under "other composers" or similarly all-encompassing categories.
So, I suggest that if you have a favorite composer, start a new thread on his behalf, just as we have created threads for different aspects of Raff's work.
Of course, sometimes it will be possible to include many composers in the same topic, say "Great Song Writers" or "Neglected Violin Concertos". But the point is to avoid a "one size fits all" category.
Just a thought!

And a fine thought too, which I fully support. Most of you only wanted one other all-encompasing non-Raff Forum and that's what you'll get. John's suggestion will make using that forum as useful as possible.
I really have no ambition to have Forums without number - just think of the R's alone: Rietz, Reinecke, Rubinstein (Anton and Nicolai), Reissiger, Rheinberger, Respighi, Rott etc. etc...

Agree with John. Mark, correct me if I am wrong. The two forums will be structured much like the existing ones. But threads can be started as required.
That is, if someone is horrified by a new recording of Raff's Z Minor Glockenspiel Concerto, he/she presses the button on the Raff forum and moans in comfort. Leaving others to chime in.
Conversely, if someone wants to chat about sleeping romantic master Manfred Schlock, or about neglected Glockenspiel Concertos, one presses a button on the other site. Easy to manage. And the threads - a really important issue - will make comments and information on composer/works/recordings/ etc easier to track down in the future.
There will be connecting points of reference,of course. For example, when after the next six months, there are no less than 30 new recordings of Raff's Glockenspiel Concerto available, there would be vigorous discussions not just about the recordings/performances, but over the relative merits of Raff's as opposed to that of Schlock's.
Guess it is how it is meant to pan out. A bit of common sense on all our parts is all that is required.
regards
peter

Everyone. Mixed views re these comments/suggestions!Thinks its good to have threads with individual composers or"forgotten violin concerti" as thread heading, so people can locate info/debate on the composer/area they are particuarly interested in. I take this fully on board. However,I liked the idea of the general neglected Romantic composers type threads because people could exchange knowledge, recording news and enthusiasms ina more all-encompassing way. I find this very exciting and can lead to informative and stimulating discussions. I would see it as well within the scope of the Non-Raff forum, as long as the thread title made the generalness of the content explicit! New people have contributed to these wider-ranging discussions, so there is a way to bring them into it too.
I think general INFORMED (by knowledge AND enthusiasm)discussion about Raff and the other unfairly forgotten 19th century musicians has been one of the strengths of this Society's Forum, just as much as individual topics like the Raff Sring Quartets or Michael Ponti. I wouldnt like to see this disappear!Best wishes, Steve Benson |
