Subject: IS ARNOLD BAX ANOTHER NEGLECTED COMPOSER?
Message:
Dear Friends:
I am sorry it has taken so long to contact to this wonderful Forum!
I am glad to read about the young Raff´s life in Switzerland.
I would like to request your expert opinions about the english neglected composer Arnold Bax.
I wondered listening to "Titangel". It´s a great and well orchestrated sea landascape picture. I am afraid that Bax´ tone poems that I listened as "Titangel", "The tale the pine tree knew", "November Woods", "Nympholept" or "Overture to a Picaresque Comedy" are better than his long scale Symphonies.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards from Spain!
Fernando.

FWIW, I'm afraid that I just don't "get" Bax. In fact I don't get any British composer of the Bax / Vaughan Williams generation, despite being English myself. To me, his symphonies all sound pretty much the same - at turns bombastic and all-purpose pastoral. No doubt he's a fine composer - he just doesn't push any of my buttons.

Dear Mark,
Thank you for your expert opinion. I think Bax iks the Strauss´ english version although at times he sounds like a competent Sibelius imitator. I confess I prefer to listen to Bax´ Symphonies than the Sibelius ones, with the only exception of Sibelius 5th. Symphony. Perhaps, my Bax´favorite is the 7th. I also have heard the 2nd., 4th. and 5th ones. I am afraid Bax is a good composer although under the Elgar´s or Vaughan-Williams level.
Kind regards from Barcelona,
Fernando.
