Subject: Naxos Deletions of Raff
Message:
In an earlier thread, someone noticed that Raff titles were disappearing from Marco Polo. I replied that Naxos was simply transfering the titles to the flagship label. Now I am not so sure.
Recall that after the appearance of the Vaterland Symphony on Naxos, the label followed up with the 2nd Symphony. This was listed in the 2003 catalog. Then came the Symphony 3 + 10 combo, but at the same time, the 2nd Symphony was dropped from the catalog.
I've noticed a similar pattern with some other composers: it's as if Naxos is only re-releasing items for a limited time.
So, what happened to the Naxos re-release of the C major symphony?

Yes, John, I share your concern and accordingly I've just emailed Klaus Heymann to see if he can give us a definitive statement of their intentions.
Generally speaking, I much prefer the new Stadlmair interpretations to their Marco Polo / Naxos equivalents and with the imminent release of the 7th. Symphony, only the 4th. and the four Seasons works will be missing from that cycle - a gap which Tudor intend to fill.
Since yesterday we have at last Werner Andreas Albert's four Seasons symphonies, recordings which date from the early 1990s. I haven't heard them yet, so I can't vouch for their quality. The trouble is that Tudor isn't the easiest label to track down and cpo are something of a specialist outfit too. Nonetheless, together with the Tudor issues and a smattering of recordings of the 3rd., 4th. and 5th. on other labels, all the bases are covered.
That said, Naxos is the best selling label in the world and, even if their performances aren't top notch, they do give a composer a lot of exposure.
We'll see what Herr Heymann has to say.

No reply yet from Klaus Heymann / HNH, but I have just learned that, hot on the heals of issuing the four Seasons symphonies this month, cpo will be releasing Werner Andreas Albert's 7th. symphony (coupled with the Jubilee Overture) next month.
Who'd ever have thought that we'd have three commercial versions of "In den Alpen"?

Reassurance from Klaus Heymann, who says:
"Eventually , all the Marco Polo Raff symphonies will be released on Naxos".
A follow up email from Peter Bromley of their UK office says:
"All the remaining Raff Symphonies will indeed be eventually transferred to Naxos, we expect during the next 2-3 years depending on how quickly Marco Polo stocks are depleted. Nos 2, 7, 8 and 9 are still listed in the 2004 Marco Polo catalogue".
So there we are. That said, I've been listening to the new budget cpo "Seasons" set, from Werner Andreas Albert. First impressions are largely favourable, so they'll face stiff competition.
Cheers,

It has just dawned on me that the specific question as to why the combined Nos.3/10 disk was issued on Naxos instead of No.2 as forecast in the catalogue, wasn't answered by Heymann or Bromley.
I think, though, that we can infer from Bromley's response that stocks of 3/10 on Marco Polo became exhausted first and so it was that disk which was reissued. He says that 2 is still in the MP catalogue.
Going further, I guess that we can expect to see the 4/11, 5 and 6 CDs next on Naxos, with 2, 7 and 8/9 bringing up the rear.
